HOW TO GET QUALIFIED...
This information has been provided to assist those new to the Telecommunications Industry, in understanding what type of work is available, what qualifications are required, and how to obtain the needed qualifications.
What Qualifications are required to work in the technical side of the Telecommunications Industry?
This depends on the particular areas of work:
Outside cabling work such as the street cabling for a carrier (such as Telstra) needs qualifications which include cable jointing and cable fault finding.
Outside work involving installation of pits and pipes for street cabling as installed by contractors to Telstra requires specialist pit and pipe skills.
Internal building cabling for telephone and data/networking requires the cabling competencies that enable you to gain a cabling 'licence' now known as the 'Open Registration'. In fact this Open Registration is mandatory and you can be fined up to $13,000 for cabling without it.
Installation of telephone switching equipment, radio or optical fibre transmission equipment or broadband equipment requires particular competencies.
Design and project management also requires particular competencies.
The telecommunications industry has developed a series of qualifications and within each level provide some choices so that qualifications can be 'tailored' to meet the skills required for particular areas of the industry. These qualifications and the specialist competencies which comprise them are contained in the Telecommunications Training Package, ICT02. Details of this training package can be accessed at www.ntis.gov.au (which is the national training and information service web site).
